With its layers of bold dark fruit, cassis, spice, and earthiness, Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia Valley in Washington State is a powerful dry red that’s among the most admired in the world. Smooth, layered, and complex, this finessed wine is perfect for rich dishes that can stand up to its power. 

Lying along the foothills of the Cascade Mountains to the west, Columbia Valley is protected from rainy weather so grapes enjoy dry summers with long cool nights that enable full ripening and concentrated flavors. Irrigation comes from the Columbia River and its tributaries, a supply that’s carefully controlled resulting in quality fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most-widely planted grape here alongside a host of other black and white grapes. Wine grapes have grown in this region since the 1860s with sub-regions like Yakima Valley and Walla Walla garnering reputations for particularly high quality. 

Fun Fact: Washington State is popularly thought of as a rainy region but Columbia valley enjoys more sunshine throughout the year than Napa Valley, a feature that makes it ideal for grape cultivation.
