Macon

Finessed wines from light to rich and creamy with juicy apple, peach, and pineapple.

Hailing from the southern reaches of Burgundy in eastern France, keeping with traditions of the region, Mâcon white is made from the Chardonnay grape. Here, you find White Burgundy at its most opulent with ripe, creamy wines displaying layers of stone and tropical fruit in the premium style of Mâcon. Lighter table wines show another face of Chardonnay with fresh citrus and green apple.

Mâcon is produced in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy where the warmer temperatures compared to the rest of the region result in wines with telltale ripe, creamy styles, and gentle acidity. Several quality tiers of wine are available offering excellent value for such an admired wine-producing area. For a cut above, look out for the names Lugny, Saint-Véran, and Pouilly-Fuissé which is famously located on the sun-kissed slopes of the striking Rocher de Solutré.

Fun Fact: The Mâconnais is so temperate compared to the rest of Burgundy that its grapes are ready for harvest two weeks before fruit in Chablis at the region’s northern tip.
