Savoie Red

Deep dark spicy fruit and floral notes with gamey hints and good aging ability in dry peppery red from eastern France.

In a region known for its white wines, Savoie’s red made from the native Mondeuse grape stands out with layers of tart berry fruit and violet notes all underpinned by deep peppery, savory hints and lively spice. This wine is perfect for storing for a few years to allow its character to mellow and deepen and pairs well with herby sausage, BBQ lamb, and pizzas. Not a lot of Savoie red finds its way out of eastern France so, if you come across a bottle, don’t miss the chance to try it!

Savoie is a wine region close to the Swiss border that, across its stunning mountains and lake-dotted terrain, produces reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines. Somewhat off the beaten track for enophiles, its wines feature many indigenous grapes that have acquired the status of hidden gems because they’re so hard to find beyond Savoie. Modernized winemaking techniques and dedicated winemakers are steadily winning a niche on the international stage.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Savoie and neighboring Switzerland have the same flag – a white cross on a red background? This feature appears on many a local wine bottle label.
