Loire Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc loves the cool climate of France’s Loire Valley, appearing in styles that range from vibrant, light, and delicately floral to concentrated and well-built. A heart of fresh, berry fruit is Loire Cabernet Franc’s standout feature with bell pepper notes in lighter styles and good tartness that lends itself well to tomato-rich dishes.

The Loire Valley is noted for its single-grape Cabernet Franc wines that allow the pure character of this versatile variety to shine through. Unlike in Bordeaux where it plays a blending role, in the Loire, this grape expresses itself fully in a choice of two main styles. At one end of the spectrum, there are light, herbaceous wines made for drinking early and at the other, tannic, bolder styles that can develop in the bottle. Cabernet Franc flourishes in the center of the Loire where some of the most distinct wines are made in Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur-Savigny.

Fun Fact: Cabernet Franc is the parent of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
