Abouriou

Powerful black grape from southwest France making wines with blackberry, black cherry, spice, black pepper, tobacco, and earthy hints.

Commonly used in red blends to add structure and depth, Abouriou also produces stand-alone wines with intense spicy dark fruit and peppery notes. This relatively rare grape thrives in the Côtes du Marmandais in Bordeaux, France, and also grows in California and Oregon where winemakers produce velvety, rounded styles.

This obscure black grape excels in blends from southwest France where it adds robustness and aging potential in wines with classic Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec as well as Syrah and Gamay. Food-friendly, richly fruity, and approachable, Abouriou is hard to come by so highly worth checking out if you get the chance!

Fun Fact: In California, Abouriou has the poetic and noble name “Earl Burgundy”.
